Canada ended its long wait for a FIFA World Cup victory on June 18th. They defeated Qatar 6-0, securing their first win in the tournament's history. Qatar had to play against Canada with only nine players. Two of their players were sent off due to red cards. The match was marked by considerable commotion. Qatar's Homan Ahmed was sent off in the first half, while Assim Madibo received a red card in the second half for a dangerous tackle on Ismail Kone.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was also present at the stadium during the match against Qatar. He sat with FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Jonathan David scored three goals for Canada. One of his goals came in regulation time and three in stoppage time. Cyle Larin scored in the 16th minute and Nathan Saliba in the 64th. Mohamed Manaei scored an own goal in the 75th minute.

Canada earned its first win in its eighth World Cup match. Only Honduras (9), Egypt (8), and New Zealand (7) have played more World Cup matches without a win. Canada's first match ended in a 1-1 draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina. Qatar also played Switzerland to a 1-1 draw.
Switzerland halts Bosnia-Herzegovina's unstoppable run
In the second group match, Switzerland secured their first win of the tournament, defeating Bosnia-Herzegovina 4-1. Johan Manjabi, a 74th-minute substitute, scored the first goal. Ruben Vargas then added the second in the 84th. This breakthrough came after Tarik Muharemovic was sent off for a dangerous tackle, forcing Bosnia-Herzegovina to play with 10 men for the final few minutes. Manjabi struck again in the 90th minute. Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka converted a penalty in stoppage time. Ermin Mahmic scored for Bosnia-Herzegovina in the second half of injury time.
Bosnia-Herzegovina were unbeaten in nine consecutive matches before this match. They held the Swiss team scoreless in the first half. However, Manjabi's goal and Muharemov's red card in the second half changed the course of the match.
