With Shadman departing for a golden duck, Starc achieved the feat of taking a wicket in the first over of a match for the eighth time in Test cricket history. In this feat, he equaled former England fast bowler James Anderson. Starc's impressive form continued, dismissing Shadman Islam, Tanjid Hasan, Nazmul Hossain Shanto, and Liton Das for ducks. Four Bangladesh batsmen were dismissed for ducks, and the team managed only 64 runs, making it Bangladesh's lowest Test total against Australia.

Mitchell Starc took six wickets for Australia on the first day, bowling six maidens in his 10-over spell. This made him the tenth-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket with 441 wickets. Starc pushed Dale Steyn (439 wickets) out of the top 10 on this list.

Following Starc's bowling, Bangladesh's Shoriful Islam wreaked havoc on the Mackay pitch . Shoriful didn't allow the Australian batsmen to settle down, taking six wickets for 35 runs in 11 overs. His lethal bowling reduced Australia to 165 for eight, allowing Australia to take a crucial 101-run lead by the end of the first day on a fast-bowling pitch. Now, on the second day, the Australian bowlers will once again look to wreak havoc on Bangladesh and push them on the back foot, while Bangladesh's comeback now rests entirely in the hands of their batsmen.
